Acquisition Alert! The Monterey Bay Aquarium in California recently acquired Oil Spill 9, 2010 by Daniel Beltrá. The piece is part of Beltrá’s series SPILL, where he captures the affects of the Deepwater Horizon Gulf Oil Spill in 2010. Created through aerial photography, his work explores contemporary environmental issues and conservation. Beltrá discusses his work:
My photographs show the vast scale of transformation our world is under from man-made stresses. To capture this, I have found it is often best to work from the air, which more easily allows for the juxtaposition of nature with the destruction wrought by unsustainable development.
This piece, along with several other photographs by Beltrá, will be on view at the aquarium from March 27th, 2019 to March 27th, 2020. Be sure to check out the exhibition if you are in the Monterey area!
